Internship experience in construction company in Norway
Jolanta Budzejko
Summer 2018… I just graduated from master studies. And as most of graduates I was thinking about my future plans and career paths possibilities. That was also the time when I just got back from Erasmus study exchange in Belgium where I defended my master thesis. Erasmus studies revealed great opportunity to get international experience which makes you not just potentially more attractive to future employer but also enriches your personality.
That time I was so ready for more international experience, that I decided to apply for an internship abroad. As I am a civil engineering student I decided to work in a one of Scandinavian countries – Norway in company Promostal AS. Promostal is present and active on Norwegian market since 2008. Promostal is a specialized steel and construction company providing complete solutions for their clients. It undertakes design, fabrication and erection of steelwork for all the forms of construction in industrial and commercial building, but also steel construction for technology.
Company takes part in ones of the biggest bridges and structures projects in Norway. I was lucky enough to do my internship during the Halogalandsbrua – Stairs of Steel, Narvik project. I was able to see and be part of works which were carried in field and also observe the project manager job and duties.
We used to start our day with briefing, finished tasks discussion and dividing of that day tasks. My supervisor used to take a walk in the field, check quality of works and solve any issues that appeared during assembly of constructions.
I was welcomed really warm by the company and coworkers. Promostal helped a lot with transportation and accommodation questions. I had great mentors and an incredible chance to take part in such construction project. My experience and knowledge as a civil engineer enlarged considerably. I was able to create professional contacts with colleagues and companies that work abroad.
Erasmus internship is a great opportunity to meet other culture, to know better other country, language and local peoples. Norway has amazing landscape, seeing the fjords was my big dream from the childhood. It was a chance to see a little bit of beautiful north of Norway.
I would like to say a big thank you to my Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, all Promostal team for giving my opportunity to be part of Erasmus family. If you have any doubts while reading this, do not hesitate, apply right now and enjoy all benefits of having international internship.
